Because sharks are at the top of the food chain, they are particularly important for the balance of the oceans. But ocean pollution and overfishing have already caused the shark populations to shrink significantly.
Sharks have been at the top of the food chain for 450 million years keeping our seas healthy. They are a crucial part of an ecosystem that provides a third of our world with food produces more oxygen than the entire rainforest absorbs half of the human-made carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and regulates the temperature and weather of our planet.
When the food webs in the oceans collapse the plankton in the oceans perish which in turn has consequences for us.
Approx. 70% of the world's oxygen is produced by phytoplankton. So it's about us too.
STATISTICALLY SEEN AND THEREFORE ALSO REALISTICALLY CONSIDERED SHARK IS NOT THE ANIMAL THAT SO MANY TAKE IT FOR BUT MUST BE PROTECTED.
Just to get a glimpse of how "dangerous" sharks really are for us - here is a little comparison.
Number of people who died - responsible animal
725,000 - mosquitoes
500,000 - people
100,000 - venomous snakes
25,000 - dogs
10,000 - predatory bugs
10,000 - water snails
5,000 - scorpions
several 1,000 tsetse flies
several 1,000 - tapeworms
1,000 - crocodiles
2 - sharks (as of 2019)
over 150,000,000 - yes, millions of sharks "disappear" every year
(Numbers are taken from various reports and statistics from the years 2019/20.)
WHAT ARE SO MANY SHARKS KILLED FOR?
Shark can also be found in high quantities in cosmetics. For example squalene: In many skin creams and hair care products, the oil squalene or the chemically modified, higher quality squalane is used and is considered a moisturizer. Squalene occurs in particularly high concentrations in shark liver (Latin squalus = shark).
Alternatively, it can also be obtained from vegetable oils, for example, but animals are the simpler and cheaper way of extracting the substance. Not only that, but also collages, the magic word for many "beauty creams", are also made by manufacturers from the cartilage skeletons of countless sharks and rays.
Speaking of squalene: It is also used in vaccine adjuvants to improve the effectiveness. Shark cartilage and Co. are sold for all sorts of "hocus-pocus".
Potency enhancing, anti-cancer, eyesight ... and and and. Sharks are being killed for a number of pointless preparations despite so many species of them being critically endangered.
For "classics" like shark fin soup, sharks are massively finned. The fins of the mostly living sharks are cut off and then thrown overboard, so that they slowly and painfully die. Wrongly declared, shark meat is also hidden in our food. Have you ever eaten Schillerlocke? Dogfish are usually hiding behind it. Unfortunately surimi in sushi also often contains shark. These are just two very well-known examples.
Shark meat is heavily contaminated with methyl mercury and therefore very harmful to health.
It can cause irreparable brain and nerve damage, kidney damage, deformities in babies, infertility, and possibly cancer. So why eat?
